Devant les difficult\u00e9s pour la m\u00e9moire GDDR5 \u00e0 offrir une bande passante plus importante sans augmenter de mani\u00e8re trop sensible la consommation, AMD a fait le choix d\u00e8s 2015 de la m\u00e9moire HBM – High-Bandwidth Memory<\/em> – pour ses Radeon les plus puissantes. Avec une bande passante totale de 512 Go\/s, la m\u00e9moire HBM de Hynix \u00e9tait alors sans concurrence. Depuis, Samsung a lanc\u00e9 la production de masse de sa m\u00e9moire HBM2, utilis\u00e9e entre autres par NVIDIA pour sa puce Tesla P100. Hynix devrait de son c\u00f4t\u00e9 commencer \u00e0 fabriquer en masse sa propre m\u00e9moire HBM2 d’ici la fin du trimestre.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Le futur : HBM3 plus rapide, ou HBM \u00ab Low Cost \u00bb<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n

Les deux constructeurs ont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 leur vision du futur de la m\u00e9moire HBM \u00e0 l’occasion de la conf\u00e9rence Hot Chips 28. Deux solutions semblent se dessiner : la premi\u00e8re avec une m\u00e9moire HBM3 (ou xHBM pour Extreme HBM, selon les termes de Samsung) encore plus rapide, la seconde avec une m\u00e9moire HBM aux co\u00fbts r\u00e9duits, destin\u00e9e \u00e0 faire adopter en masse ce nouveau type de m\u00e9moire \u00e0 la place de l’actuelle m\u00e9moire GDDR5.\"Image<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Les sp\u00e9cifications de la m\u00e9moire HBM3 sont encore loin d’\u00eatre finalis\u00e9es, mais les premi\u00e8res rumeurs laissent supposer que la bande passante atteindrait 512 Go\/s par die<\/em>, contre 256 Go\/s pour un die <\/em>HBM2. De quoi atteindre 2 To\/s avec seulement quatre dies <\/em>empil\u00e9s, le tout sans cons\u00e9quence sur la consommation ! Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la version low cost<\/em>, les constructeurs devraient jouer sur le nombre d’entr\u00e9es\/sorties pour r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts : en passant de 1024 I\/O \u00e0 seulement 512, on r\u00e9duit d’autant le nombre de TSV (Through Silicon Vias<\/em>) et donc la complexit\u00e9 de l’interposer, ainsi que la taille des puces. En augmentant l\u00e9g\u00e8rement la bande passante par pin, il est possible de maintenir une bande passante importante, sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle offerte par la HBM1.
