Si depuis de nombreuses ann\u00e9es, le d\u00e9veloppement de processeurs \u00e9choit essentiellement \u00e0 des entreprises am\u00e9ricaines, certains pays revoient leur mani\u00e8re d\u2019appr\u00e9hender ces enjeux et sortent progressivement de leur immobilisme. On pense bien s\u00fbr \u00e0 la Chine<\/a>, qui d\u00e9veloppe diverses solutions depuis maintenant plusieurs ann\u00e9es, ou encore aux pays europ\u00e9ens via le projet EPI<\/a> (European Processor Initiative<\/em>) lanc\u00e9 en 2019 ; une autre contr\u00e9e entre en lice, la Russie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le minist\u00e8re de l\u2019industrie et du commerce russe ambitionne de d\u00e9velopper un processeur 32 c\u0153urs d\u2019ici 2025. Pour cela, il a lanc\u00e9 un appel d\u2019offre \u00e0 7,4893 milliards de roubles (environ 83 millions d\u2019euros) \u2013 \u00e0 titre de comparaison, le projet europ\u00e9en EPI engage 2,7 milliards d\u2019euros. Ce financement doit permettre d\u2019\u00e9laborer un processeur bas\u00e9 sur l\u2019architecture VLIW Elbrus et grav\u00e9 en 7 nm ou mieux. Il se destinerait \u00e0 plusieurs applications : HPC, serveurs, centres de stockage, et embarquerait logiquement pas mal d’unit\u00e9s de traitement IA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PCIe 5.0 et DDR5<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

La Russie n\u2019a pas beaucoup d\u2019entreprises sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es dans le domaine. Les deux principales sont Baikal Electronics et le MCST (Moscow Center of SPARC Technologies<\/em>). La premi\u00e8re \u00e9labore des CPU et des FPGA ; la seconde n\u2019est autre que la propri\u00e9taire de l\u2019architecture VLIW Elbrus. La firme, financ\u00e9e par le gouvernement, doit soumettre officiellement sa proposition d’ici le 10 d\u00e9cembre 2020 ; a priori<\/em>, il s\u2019agit d\u2019une simple formalit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les projets en cours du MCST sont des processeurs Elbrus \u00e0 12 et 16 c\u0153urs ; ils sont pr\u00e9vus pour 2021. La puce Elbrus \u00e0 32 c\u0153urs b\u00e9n\u00e9ficierait de 64 Mo de cache ; elle prendrait en charge jusqu\u2019\u00e0 2 To de m\u00e9moire DDR5 sur six canaux. Enfin, elle g\u00e9rerait \u00e9galement jusqu\u2019\u00e0 64 lignes PCIe 5.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enfin, comme souvent, cette volont\u00e9 d’\u00e9mancipation semble en partie li\u00e9e \u00e0 des enjeux de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 nationale. Dans la documentation de MCST, on peut par exemple lire, dans une traduction toute approximative, des phrases comme “les processeurs \u00e9trangers ont un grand nombre de fonctions et de vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9s non document\u00e9es au niveau mat\u00e9riel […] ; et les unit\u00e9s de contr\u00f4le, qui sait comment elles fonctionnent ? Ce sont des ordinateurs dans un ordinateur, avec leur propre syst\u00e8me d’exploitation et leur propre microprogramme. Personne ne peut les \u00e9tudier, car les codes sources sont manquants et le microprogramme lui-m\u00eame est crypt\u00e9. Elles ont acc\u00e8s \u00e0 n’importe quel programme, n’importe quelle donn\u00e9e, “au dessus” des m\u00e9canismes de protection du logiciel”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intel Management Engine et AMD Platform Security Processor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

La documentation de MCST et, in fine<\/em>, le projet russe, font ici r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 deux technologies “de s\u00e9curit\u00e9”, int\u00e9gr\u00e9es aux processeurs Intel et AMD. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 d’Intel, il s’agit de l’Intel Management Engine<\/em> (IME), bas\u00e9 sur le CPU 32 bits Intel Quark x86 et faisant directement tourner l’OS MINIX 3. Son cr\u00e9ateur, Andrew S. Tanenbaum, s’en \u00e9tait d’ailleurs offusqu\u00e9 \u00e0 travers une lettre ouverte<\/a> adress\u00e9e au fondeur de Santa Clara. Et du c\u00f4t\u00e9 d’AMD, il s’agit du Platform Security Processor<\/em> (PSP), en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 un c\u0153ur ARM avec TrustZone, int\u00e9gr\u00e9 au processeur central en tant que coprocesseur. Chez Intel, la solution est int\u00e9gr\u00e9e au chipset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans les deux cas, on peut en effet parler de “processeurs dans le processeur” (… ou dans le chipset, donc !), susceptibles de fonctionner de mani\u00e8re autonome, y compris PC \u00e9teint s’il est malgr\u00e9 tout aliment\u00e9. Une \u00e9vidente porte d’entr\u00e9e pour les pirates, que le projet russe vise \u00e0 fermer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
