Lanc\u00e9e en 2010 par de chercheurs de l’Universit\u00e9 de Californie \u00e0 Berkeley, l\u2019architecture de jeu d\u2019instruction RISC-V (Reduced Instruction Set Computing<\/em>), une solution enti\u00e8rement open source, a entra\u00een\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9laboration de processeurs RISC-V par plusieurs entreprises, notamment la startup am\u00e9ricaine SiFive<\/a>, Microsemi ou encore Western Digital. La soci\u00e9t\u00e9 californienne Micro Magic apporte sa pierre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9difice avec une puce 64 bits annonc\u00e9e meilleure qu\u2019un Apple M1 ou qu\u2019un Arm Cortex-A9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selon un communiqu\u00e9<\/a> de l\u2019entreprise publi\u00e9 aujourd’hui, un c\u0153ur de son processeur RISC-V 64 bits pourrait monter \u00e0 5 GHz avec une tension de 1,1 V ; dans ces conditions, il obtiendrait 13 000 points sur CoreMark. Toujours d\u2019apr\u00e8s cette publication, la consommation est de 0,69 mW \u00e0 3,08 GHz, pour un score CoreMark de 8 200 points ; cela donne un impressionnant “110 000 CoreMarks\/Watt <\/em>[118 840]”. Par ailleurs, le site EEtimes indique que pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment, Micro Magic donnait une fr\u00e9quence de 4,25 GHz pour une tension de 0,8 V et une consommation de 200 mW ; dans ces conditions, la puce marquerait 11 000 points sur CoreMark. Un certain Andy Huang, membre de Micro Magic, a d’ailleurs r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 quelques questions d’EETimes ; l’homme en a profit\u00e9 pour vanter les performances de ce processeur RISC-V.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’argument : une efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique hors norme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andy Huang explique\u00a0: “En utilisant le benchmark de l’EEMBC<\/a>, nous obtenons 55 000 CoreMarks par Watt<\/em> [11 000 \/ 0,2]. La puce M1 r\u00e9alise environ 10 000 CoreMarks ; divisez ce chiffre par huit c\u0153urs et 15 W au total, et cela donne moins de 100 CoreMarks par Watt <\/em>[83,3]. Le processeur Arm le plus rapide selon les crit\u00e8res de l’EEMBC est le Cortex-A9\u00a0; avec 22 343 CoreMarks. Divisez ce chiffre par quatre c\u0153urs et 5 W par c\u0153ur, et vous obtenez 1 112 CoreMarks par Watt <\/em>[1 117]”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Huang ajoute\u00a0: “Dans les appareils actuels fonctionnant sur batterie, le CoreMarks par Watt est beaucoup plus important que le CoreMarks par Megahertz. Pour un appareil typique de 5W, nous pouvons mettre en place 25 c\u0153urs. Qui peut faire 25 c\u0153urs dans l’industrie de la t\u00e9l\u00e9phonie mobile actuellement ? La plupart se limitent \u00e0 quatre c\u0153urs ou huit c\u0153urs”<\/em>. Andy Huang indique que son entreprise proposera son processeur RISC-V \u00e0 des clients prochainement. \u00c0 ceux qui verrait l\u00e0 une d\u00e9marche commerciale, l’individu tient \u00e0 pr\u00e9ciser : “<\/em>Nous sommes enti\u00e8rement autofinanc\u00e9s, nous ne cherchons donc pas de financement”<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bien s\u00fbr, ces affirmations demandent v\u00e9rification. En ce qui concerne l\u2019entreprise Micro Magic<\/a>, sachez qu’elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e en 1995 par Mark Santoro et Lee Tavrow, deux anciens de Sun Microsystems.
