Dans le domaine de l\u2019\u00e9lectronique, le changement de composants n\u2019a rien d\u2019inhabituel : les fabricants y ont r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement recours pour faire face \u00e0 une p\u00e9nurie ou \u00e9conomiser quelques dollars. En principe, tant qu\u2019elles n\u2019affectent pas drastiquement les performances d\u2019un produit, ces modifications passent inaper\u00e7ues ; d\u2019autant plus que certains fabricants ne prennent pas la peine de mettre \u00e0 jour les sp\u00e9cifications. Ce n\u2019est pas le cas de Samsung : la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 a lanc\u00e9 une nouvelle version de son SSD 970 EVO qui se distingue notamment par un nouveau num\u00e9ro de s\u00e9rie. Ces modifications ont attir\u00e9 l\u2019attention d\u2019une cha\u00eene YouTube chinoise, dont le testeur a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de comparer les performances de l\u2019ancienne version du SSD 970 Evo Plus dans une capacit\u00e9 de 1 To \u00e0 la nouvelle. R\u00e9sultat : les performances varient, avec \u00e0 la fois des am\u00e9liorations et des d\u00e9gradations en fonction de la charge de travail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019ancienne version, produite en avril 2021, porte le num\u00e9ro de produit MZVLB1T0HBLR. Elle embarque un contr\u00f4leur Phoenix [S4LR020] et de la m\u00e9moire NAND 3D TLC \u00e0 96 couches (K9DUGY8J5B-DCK0). La version la plus r\u00e9cente, qui ressemble au 980 Pro, porte le num\u00e9ro de produit MZVL21T0HBLU. Elle troque le contr\u00f4leur Phoenix au profit d\u2019une puce Elpis [S4LV003]. Le SSD h\u00e9rite toujours de m\u00e9moire NAND 3D TLC \u00e0 96 couches, mais estampill\u00e9e K9DUGY8J5B-CCK0. La DRAM LPDDR4 utilis\u00e9e ne change pas. Toutes ces donn\u00e9es sont rassembl\u00e9es dans le tableau ci-dessous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un cache SLC qui passe de 40 Go \u00e0 115 Go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Venons-en maintenant aux r\u00e9sultats. Les images situ\u00e9es \u00e0 gauche concernent la version d\u2019origine ; celles de droite, la r\u00e9vision. La nouvelle version du SSD de Samsung s\u2019av\u00e8re plus rapide dans les charges de travail jusqu’\u00e0 115 Go. La raison est simple : HD Tune Pro montre que la r\u00e9vision poss\u00e8de un cache SLC plus important, de 115 Go contre 42 Go pour la version plus ancienne. Cependant, une fois le cache SLC rempli, la r\u00e9vision souffre de d\u00e9bits d\u2019\u00e9criture nettement inf\u00e9rieurs. En effet, alors que la version originale atteint des vitesses d’\u00e9criture de donn\u00e9es d’environ 1 500 Mo\/s apr\u00e8s les 40 premiers Go \u00e9crits, la r\u00e9vision plafonne \u00e0 800 Mo\/s apr\u00e8s 115 Go \u00e9crits. Bon, rien de dramatique, puisqu’au bout du compte, la nouvelle version a termin\u00e9 le processus de copie un peu plus rapidement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Des performances en forte baisse du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Western Digital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Si les nouveaux acqu\u00e9reurs d’un SSD 970 EVO n’auront pas de quoi se sentir l\u00e9s\u00e9s, la situation est tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rente du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Western Digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u00e0 encore, le fabricant a chang\u00e9 certains composants pour ses SSD NVMe WD Blue SN550 commercialis\u00e9s en Asie. Selon Expreview, les performances d’\u00e9criture en dehors du cache SLC sont en chute libre. Et contrairement \u00e0 Samsung, Wester Digital n\u2019a pas \u00e9tendu la taille de ce dernier (12 Go).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les mod\u00e8les de 1 To produits depuis quelques semaines s\u2019armeraient de puces m\u00e9moire diff\u00e9rentes : 002031 1T00 contre 60523 1T00 pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment. Un changement qui aurait une incidence sur les performances en \u00e9criture sans cache : elles s\u2019effondrent apparemment \u00e0 390 Mo\/s. Le SanDisk Extreme, dont la construction est quasiment similaire au SN550, caracole pourtant \u00e0 850 Mo\/s hors cache SLC dans sa version 1 To. L\u2019ancienne version de 1 To du SSD de WD atteint quant \u00e0 elle 600 Mo\/s. Concr\u00e8tement, la r\u00e9vision d\u00e9livre des performances proches du mod\u00e8le d\u2019entr\u00e9e de gamme WD Green SN350.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00e9ponse de Western Digital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Western Digital a r\u00e9agi \u00e0 ces accusations en mettant \u00e0 jour les performances en \u00e9criture et lecture al\u00e9atoires des mod\u00e8les de 250 Go, 512 Go et 1 To. Computerbase a contact\u00e9 WD pour savoir si ces r\u00e9visions \u00e9taient vendues en Europe et surtout, si les clients avaient un moyen de savoir quelle version ils achetaient. Voici la r\u00e9ponse de la firme :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“En juin 2021, nous avons remplac\u00e9 la NAND du SSD NVMe WD Blue SN550 et mis \u00e0 jour le micrologiciel. Dans le m\u00eame temps, nous avons \u00e9galement mis \u00e0 jour la fiche technique du produit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 l’avenir, lorsqu’une modification sera apport\u00e9e \u00e0 un SSD interne existant, nous introduirons un nouveau num\u00e9ro de mod\u00e8le si les sp\u00e9cifications publi\u00e9es associ\u00e9es changent. Cela nous permettra d’accro\u00eetre encore la transparence pour nos clients. Il est important pour nous de fournir \u00e0 nos consommateurs les meilleures solutions possibles pour leurs besoins de stockage de donn\u00e9es”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
