Le tout premier processeur d\u2019Intel, le 4004, f\u00eate ses 50 ans. Cette puce, lanc\u00e9e en novembre 1971, est l’\u0153uvre de Federico Faggin, Stan Mazor et Macian E. Hoff. Elle “a ouvert la voie aux microprocesseurs informatiques modernes”<\/em> selon Intel. ; l\u2019Intel 4004 \u00e9tait con\u00e7u pour des calculatrices de bureau. Le processeur ayant donn\u00e9 naissance \u00e0 l\u2019architecture x86, l\u2019Intel 8086, est plus tardif, puisqu\u2019il date de 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour illustrer les progr\u00e8s effectu\u00e9s en 50 ans, Intel propose les donn\u00e9es comparatives ci-dessous, mettant en opposition l\u2019Intel 4004 aux r\u00e9cents processeurs Alder Lake<\/a>. Le premier est grav\u00e9 en 10 microm\u00e8tres (10 000 nanom\u00e8tres) tandis que les seconds profitent d\u2019une lithographie Intel 7, soit du 10 nm. Au niveau du nombre de transistors, Intel en mentionne plusieurs milliards pour les puces de 12e g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, contre 2300 pour l\u2019Intel 4004. Enfin, si l\u2019Intel 4004 est un 1 c\u0153ur \/ 1 thread cadenc\u00e9 \u00e0 750 kHz, les processeurs Alder Lake proposent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 16 c\u0153urs \/ 24 threads et atteignent des fr\u00e9quences de 5,2 GHz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le communiqu\u00e9 d\u2019Intel raconte la gen\u00e8se du 4004 ainsi : “En 1969, Nippon Calculating Machine Corp. a contact\u00e9 Intel pour concevoir un ensemble de circuits int\u00e9gr\u00e9s pour son prototype de calculatrice d’ing\u00e9nierie, la Busicom 141-PF. L’ing\u00e9nieur Faggin et son \u00e9quipe ont adapt\u00e9 les plans originaux de 12 puces personnalis\u00e9es et ont con\u00e7u un ensemble de quatre puces – dont le CPU 4004 – qui ont relev\u00e9 le d\u00e9fi. Finalement, le 4004, de la taille d’un ongle humain, a fourni la m\u00eame puissance de calcul que le premier ordinateur \u00e9lectronique construit en 1946, lequel occupait une pi\u00e8ce enti\u00e8re.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federico Faggin constate : “En 1970, il \u00e9tait \u00e9vident que les microprocesseurs allaient changer la fa\u00e7on dont nous concevons les syst\u00e8mes, en passant du mat\u00e9riel au logiciel. Mais la vitesse \u00e0 laquelle les microprocesseurs se sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s au fil du temps et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9s par l’industrie a \u00e9t\u00e9 vraiment surprenante.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
