En juin dernier, Sandra Rivera, directrice g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019Intel Datacenter and AI Group, pr\u00e9venait que les processeurs Xeon Scalable de 4e g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, Sapphire Rapids, auraient du retard<\/a> ; leur lancement restait n\u00e9anmoins pr\u00e9vu cette ann\u00e9e. Ces puces n\u2019arriveront finalement que l\u2019ann\u00e9e prochaine, entre la 6e et la 9e semaines, soit entre le 6 f\u00e9vrier et le 3 mars 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n

Les raisons de cet \u00e9ni\u00e8me report\u00a0? Plus de 500 probl\u00e8mes et erreurs selon des documents internes que s\u2019est procur\u00e9s Igor Wallossek. Jusqu\u2019ici, les processeurs Sapphire Rapids ont ainsi d\u00e9j\u00e0 eu douze r\u00e9visions\u00a0: A0, A1, B0, C0, C1, C2, D0, E0, E2, E3, E4 et la derni\u00e8re, E5. Malgr\u00e9 sa longue exp\u00e9rience dans le milieu, notre confr\u00e8re ne se souvient pas d\u2019un produit ayant n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 autant de steppings<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De taille \u00e0 affronter EPYC Genoa ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Les d\u00e9boires d\u2019Intel avec ses processeurs Sapphire Rapids s’expliquent en partie par une conception innovante \u00e0 base de chiplets. Il est question de quatre dies (ou tuiles pour reprendre les termes de l\u2019entreprise), interconnect\u00e9s par EMIB (Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge<\/em>). Chacun comprendrait jusqu\u2019\u00e0 15 c\u0153urs CPU ; autrement dit, la gamme proposerait des puces \u00e0 60 c\u0153urs \/ 120 threads. Pour le moment, le processeur Sapphire Rapids le mieux dot\u00e9 que nous avons crois\u00e9 poss\u00e8de 56 c\u0153urs<\/a>. Rappelons que les processeurs Xeon Scalable de 3e g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, Ice Lake-SP<\/a>, proposent 40 c\u0153urs au mieux ; l\u2019\u00e9cart entre les deux g\u00e9n\u00e9rations est donc important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D’autant plus que les processeurs Sapphire Rapids ne proposeront pas “juste” plus de c\u0153urs CPU. Ils vont \u00e9galement apporter une prise en charge de la m\u00e9moire DDR5 et HBM2e, un support de la m\u00e9moire DDR5, l\u2019ISA Advanced Matrix Extensions<\/em> (AMX).<\/p>\n\n\n

Malheureusement pour Intel, cette gamme devait initialement avoir les processeurs EPYC Milan<\/a> comme principaux concurrents. En raison du retard accumul\u00e9, ils auront finalement les EPYC Genoa<\/a> : des puces grav\u00e9es en 5 nm profitant de l\u2019architecture CPU Zen 4 et proposant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 96 c\u0153urs \/ 192 threads. Sans parler des solutions ARM, dont l’adoption dans les centres de donn\u00e9es est croissante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
