La situation autour de l’interface SATA 6 Gb\/s est confuse. La faute \u00e0 un bug qui a touch\u00e9 le seul contr\u00f4leur d\u00e9j\u00e0 disponible sur le march\u00e9, le Marvell 88SE9123. Aujourd’hui ce bug est heureusement r\u00e9volu et les premi\u00e8res cartes m\u00e8res dot\u00e9es de connecteurs SATA 6 Gb\/s sont en vente, comme l’Asus P7P55D Premium. Nous avons rapidement test\u00e9 un exemplaire afin de mesurer les gains de performances que peut offrir le SATA 6 Gb\/s aujourd’hui. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Un probl\u00e8me de bande passante<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

\"Image<\/span><\/span>Il nous faut tout d’abord rappeler un probl\u00e8me assez \u00e9pineux qui touche la plupart des cartes m\u00e8res r\u00e9centes\u00a0: le SATA 6 Gb\/s offre une bande passante th\u00e9orique de 6 Gb\/s. La norme utilisant un codage 8b\/10b (8 bits utiles pour 10 bits transmis), le d\u00e9bit maximal attendu est de 600 Mo\/s. C’est plus que la capacit\u00e9 d’un port PCI Express 2.0 1x (500 Mo\/s). La situation est pire encore pour les cartes m\u00e8res utilisant le chipset Intel P55 puisque celui-ci ne g\u00e8re que des lignes \u00e0 250 Mo\/s. Relier un contr\u00f4leur SATA 6Gb\/s sur une de ces lignes n’a aucun int\u00e9r\u00eat. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Asus, sur sa P7P55D Premium a contourn\u00e9 ce probl\u00e8me en utilisant une puce suppl\u00e9mentaire, qui aggr\u00e8ge quatre des huit lignes PCI-Express 1x que sort le P55 en deux ports PCI-Express 1x \u00e0 500 Mo\/s. Toujours 100 Mo\/s de moins que le maximum permis par la norme. Mais est-ce vraiment un probl\u00e8me avec le mat\u00e9riel d’aujourd’hui ? <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Seagate Barracuda XT<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Pour le savoir, nous avons mis la carte m\u00e8re d’Asus \u00e0 l’\u00e9preuve des deux seuls composants SATA 6 Gb\/s que nous avons pu d\u00e9nicher. Le premier est le disque dur Seagate Barracuda XT de 2 To. Tournant \u00e0 7200 tr\/min, et poss\u00e9dant un tampon de 64 Mo, il utilise des plateaux identiques aux Barracuda 7200.12 qui sont disponibles depuis de longs mois. Nous avons mesur\u00e9 les d\u00e9bits obtenus lorsque le disque \u00e9tait branch\u00e9 sur le contr\u00f4leur Marvell d’une part, et lorsqu’il \u00e9tait branch\u00e9 sur un classique port SATA 3Gb\/s offert par le chipset P55 d’autre part.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Comme on s’en doutait, l’interface SATA 6 Gb\/s ne peut pas transfigurer les performances du disque limit\u00e9es par la m\u00e9canique elle-m\u00eame. On note toutefois un mieux en lecture al\u00e9atoire.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Le SATA 6 Gb\/s pour les SSD de 2010
<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Un disque dur m\u00eame de derni\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00e9tant tr\u00e8s loin de pouvoir saturer le bus SATA 6Gb\/s, nous avons voulu nous rabattre sur un SSD. La g\u00e9n\u00e9ration actuelle de SSD plafonne \u00e9galement au maximum du SATA 3 Gb\/s (environ 250 Mo\/s, mais les prochains SSD pr\u00e9vus pour 2010 devraient d\u00e9passer cette limite.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\"Image<\/span><\/span>Nous nous sommes donc procur\u00e9 un prototype d’un SSD embarquant un nouveau contr\u00f4leur con\u00e7u lui aussi par Marvell. Ce composant est encore dans les premiers stades de son d\u00e9veloppement et Marvell n’a pas souhait\u00e9 que nous en publiions des photos. Vous ne pourrez donc pas voir que ce SSD prototype ne comprend pas de m\u00e9moire Flash mais seulement un tampon de DDR2-667. Marvell ne pr\u00e9voit pas de lancer de SSD, mais on retrouvera prochainement son contr\u00f4leur dans de nombreux SSD d’autres marques. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Clairement, le passage au SATA 6 Gb\/s est b\u00e9n\u00e9fique et le contr\u00f4leur de SSD Marvell est capable d’en tirer profit. On reste encore loin du maximum permis par le bus (600 Mo\/s), mais on peut esp\u00e9rer que les performances du contr\u00f4leur Marvell seront am\u00e9lior\u00e9es d’ici \u00e0 sa commercialisation. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Au vu de ces r\u00e9sultats, il est inutile de se ruer aujourd’hui sur une carte m\u00e8re impl\u00e9mentant de mani\u00e8re bancale le tout nouveau bus SATA 6 Gb\/s : aucun disque dur ou SSD n’en profitera. Dans quelques mois, par contre, une fois que les chipsets auront \u00e9volu\u00e9, et que les SSD de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration seront disponibles, les amateurs de hautes performances auront tout int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 opter pour une carte m\u00e8re et un SSD SATA 6 Gb\/s.
