L’effet thermo\u00e9lectrique<\/h5>\n

Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne physique, bas\u00e9 sur les effets Seebeck, Peltier et Thomson, pr\u00e9sent dans certains mat\u00e9riaux. Un mat\u00e9riau thermo\u00e9lectrique va ainsi permettre de transformer de la chaleur en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Dans les g\u00e9n\u00e9rateurs thermo\u00e9lectriques \u00e0 radio-isotope, le mat\u00e9riau utilis\u00e9 est tr\u00e8s souvent un alliage silicium-germanium (SiGe).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ordinateurs portables, t\u00e9l\u00e9phones mobiles et autres appareils \u00ab\u00a0nomades\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0: nous utilisons de plus en plus d\u2019appareils transportables n\u00e9cessitant une batterie ou un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur \u00e9lectrique pour fonctionner. De nombreux types d\u2019accumulateurs existent d\u2019ailleurs (Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-Ion, \u2026), ou sont en cours de d\u00e9veloppement (Ni-Li, \u2026).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Un RTG de la taille d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs de l\u2019universit\u00e9 du Missouri, dirig\u00e9e par le professeur Jae Wan Kwon, vient justement d\u2019annoncer la mise au point d\u2019un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur thermo\u00e9lectrique \u00e0 radio-isotope (RTG\u00a0: Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) de la taille d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de 5 cents, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 alimenter des syst\u00e8mes micro ou nano \u00e9lectrom\u00e9caniques.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Le principe est \u00ab\u00a0assez\u00a0\u00bb simple\u00a0: il produit de l’\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la chaleur \u00e9mise par d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration radioactive en utilisant l\u2019effet thermo\u00e9lectrique.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\"Image<\/span><\/span>Un semi-conducteur liquide<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Si ce type de g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur existe depuis de nombreuses ann\u00e9es (il a par exemple \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 par les sondes Voyager, ainsi que dans certains pacemakers), l\u2019exploit r\u00e9side dans la miniaturisation de ce syst\u00e8me, ainsi que dans le type de semi-conducteur utilis\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Alors que les RTG \u00ab classiques\u00a0\u00bb utilisent un semi-conducteur solide, qui peut avec le temps \u00eatre endommag\u00e9 par le rayonnement, celui utilis\u00e9 par ce RTG miniature est liquide et donc moins susceptible d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9t\u00e9rior\u00e9.
