Compatible SATA<\/h5>\n

Le SAS est compatible SATA. Ou plut\u00f4t, le SATA est compatible avec les contr\u00f4leurs SAS. En fait, un mode de compatibilit\u00e9 permet de brancher un disque dur SATA sur un contr\u00f4leur mais \u00e9videmment sans les nouveaut\u00e9s du SAS (limit\u00e9 au mode 3 gigabits\/s, 1 m\u00e8tre de c\u00e2ble, etc.). Malgr\u00e9 tout, pour les serveurs qui ont de gros besoins en stockage, mixer SAS (pour des disques rapides) et SATA (pour le stockage) est appr\u00e9ciable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Quatri\u00e8me partie de notre s\u00e9rie d’actualit\u00e9s, si nous parlions maintenant du SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). Dans les successeurs du SCSI, le SAS est le plus couramment utilis\u00e9. Le principe est assez simple : il consiste \u00e0 utiliser le principe du SATA adapt\u00e9 au SCSI. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Plus efficace<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Compar\u00e9 au SCSI, le SAS n’est pas plus rapide en th\u00e9orie : le SCSI existe en versions Ultra-320 et Ultra-640 alors que le SAS limite \u00e0 300 Mo\/s (SAS 3 gigabits\/s) et 600 Mo\/s (6 gigabits\/s). Pourtant, dans la pratique, le SAS est plus efficace : alors que le SCSI propose g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement un ou deux connecteurs et un partage de la bande passante sur chaque connecteur, c’est un peu diff\u00e9rent en SAS. Dans la majorit\u00e9 des cas, chaque disque dur dispose de son connecteur et donc de la bande passante totale de ce dernier, m\u00eame s’il est possible de partager cette derni\u00e8re et de placer plusieurs disques durs sur un seul connecteur (128 en th\u00e9orie).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Plus simple<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

Gros point int\u00e9ressant, le connecteur utilis\u00e9 est en fait le m\u00eame que celui que l’on retrouve sur les disques durs SATA. En dehors du fait qu’il permet une compatibilit\u00e9 SATA, il est surtout bien plus petit que les connecteurs SCSI traditionnels. Le c\u00e2ble est aussi un simple c\u00e2ble s\u00e9rie, mais le SAS est plus efficace que le SATA sur ce point : alors que le SATA se limite \u00e0 1 m\u00e8tre, il est possible d’atteindre 8 m\u00e8tres en SAS, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une tension plus importante pour la signalisation. De plus, il existe (comme pour l’eSATA) un c\u00e2ble permettant d’externaliser un disque dur SAS et aussi un autre connecteur permettant de relier deux disques durs \u00e0 un m\u00eame connecteur (attention, en bande passante partag\u00e9e).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Avantages et inconv\u00e9nients<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n

\"Image<\/span><\/span>Comme pour le SCSI, il reste un d\u00e9savantage de taille : le prix. La norme externalise quelques fonctions sur le disque dur (qui est donc plus on\u00e9reux) et le contr\u00f4leur est plus cher, et ce pour deux raisons. La premi\u00e8re, c’est que la demande est faible et donc le mat\u00e9riel assez cher. La seconde, c’est qu’\u00e9tant donn\u00e9 la bande passante propos\u00e9e (6 gigabits\/s actuellement), les p\u00e9riph\u00e9riques doivent utiliser un bus rapide pour la connexion au chipset et que seul le PCI-Express 4x (au moins) est suffisant pour ne pas brider l’interface. Et les cartes m\u00e8res proposant un connecteur PCI-Express 4x (ou 8x) ne sont pas l\u00e9gion (il est possible d’utiliser un connecteur 16x, mais ce n’est pas toujours possible). Notons que, m\u00eame si ce n’est pas r\u00e9ellement disponible, il est possible d’utiliser des imprimantes, des scanners (ou n’importe quel p\u00e9riph\u00e9rique disponible en SCSI) sur une interface SAS. En pratique, ce genre de branchements est r\u00e9serv\u00e9 au FireWire, un des autres successeurs du SCSI. Enfin, la diminution de la taille du connecteur SAS (par rapport aux connecteurs SCSI) a permis l’av\u00e8nement des disques durs au format SFF (Small Form Factor). Ces disques durs, tr\u00e8s populaires, utilisent fait la longueur et la largeur d’un disque 2,5 pouces, mais avec une \u00e9paisseur plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Le Velociraptor est d’ailleurs le seul disque dur SFF disponible pour les particuliers (et en SATA) alors que tous les autres mod\u00e8les se limitent au SAS.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Au final, le SAS est une interface rapide, simple et efficace, qui remplace parfaitement le SCSI dans les ordinateurs et les serveurs d’entr\u00e9e de gamme. C’est le v\u00e9ritable successeur du SCSI, m\u00eame si d’autres variantes \u00ab s\u00e9rie \u00bb de la norme existent, et nous en parlerons demain, avec l’eSATA, la Compact Flash, etc.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
